Single: When in Rome
Release Date: Friday 9th July

A catchy summer tune is on the way this month in the form of When In Rome by Muddy Elephant. The four-piece indie rock band have smashed it with this punchy, anthemic track and we can't wait to listen to it in the sun with a drink in hand.
Read on to get to know these lads and their musical inspirations.
1. Tell us a bit about your musical journey so far.
We’ve been going for a few years now, managed to get 5 tracks out, and have had various amounts of coverage, the biggest being played at Anfield on Matchday (if you’re a football fan). We’ve undergone a change in lineup welcoming Carlos and Matt to the band so we’re just eager to get gigging and show everyone what we’ve been up to.
2. Given the current situation, how does it feel to be creating and releasing new music?
It’s strange to think this is going to be the first track we’ve released that we haven’t played live yet, but that also makes it quite exciting. We’ve used the pandemic to just focus on new music, writing as much as we can.
3. How would you say When in Rome fits into your music and releases as a whole, and the musical destination that you’re heading in?
When In Rome is definitely more of a lighter indie side to us. We just wanted to release a proper indie summer track that makes people feel good. We like to think of the Foals and how they have proper indie rock with heavy riffs (Inhaler), then their bouncy indie pop tracks too (my number).
4. What is the inspiration behind When in Rome?
Like I say we wanted that happy, summer holiday vibe for a track that we don’t have yet. But one that fans can easily sing along to in the car and at gigs. The main focus was getting that catchy hook.
5. What is your process when it comes to writing songs?
It varies from song to song. Sometimes it’ll come from a jam at the end of a practice, or more recently with the pandemic one of the band will send an idea for a riff or a beat they have then we’ll take it from there.
6. How would you describe your sound to someone who hasn’t heard your music before?
We are an indie rock band with a mix of the Editors, Foals, bit of Two Door Cinema Club and a tiny bit of Catfish and The Bottlemen. We make music for all ages.
7. Where would your dream venue be to play a gig?
The Royal Albert Hall with a full Orchestra!
8. Who are the artists you can never tire of listening to?
Foo Fighters, Biffy Clyro, QOTSA, Muse, The Smiths, The Cure, Paramore.
9. What’s the best live gig you’ve been to?
As a band, Andy and I went to see Sam Fender at Liverpool Guild of Students, that was a pretty good gig!
10. What is next for Muddy Elephant?
Just getting back out there, playing as many gigs as we can, getting out the new tracks we’ve been making over lockdown and hopefully a no.1 with When In Rome ;)
